Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal hol iday in the United States commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independenc e on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. During the American Revolution, the legal separation of the Thirteen Colonies from Great Br
itain occurred on July 2, 1776, when the Second
Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence that had been proposed in June by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia de
claring the United States independent from Great Britain.[4][5] After voting for independence,
Congress turned its attention to the Declaration of Independence, a statement explaining
this decision, which had been prepared by a Committee of Five,
with Thomas Jefferson as its principal author. Congress debated a

The Romans dedicated this day to Jan us, the god of gates, doors, and beginnings. After Julius Caesar reform ed the calendar in 46 BC and was subsequently murdered, the Roman Senate vo ted to deify him on the 1st January 42 BC < span>[2] in honor of his life and his institu tion of the new rationalized calendar.[3] The month originally owes its name to th e deity Janus, who had two faces, one looking forward and the other looking backward.
