 t to organize a movement for a national holiday to commemorate Lincoln's si
 gning of the 13th Amendment. The resulting National Freedom Association pro
 posed having a memorial date to call attention to the continuing struggle f
 or freedom for African-Americans. Since President Lincoln had signed the 13
 th Amendment on the first day of February, that date was chosen to celebrat
 e National Freedom Day. The first commemoration took place on February 1, 1
 942, at <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Independence_Hall_(United_Sta

 ="Royal Navy">Royal Navy</a> from <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mal
 ta" title="Malta">Malta</a>. On taking power in 1971, the Labour Government
  indicated it wanted to re-negotiate the lease agreement with the United Ki
 ngdom. Following protracted and sometimes tense talks, a new agreement was 
 signed whereby the lease was extended till the end of March 1979 at a vastl
 y increased rent. On March 31, 1979 the last British Forces left Malta. For
  the first time in millennia, Malta was no longer a military base of a fore
 ign power and it became independent <i>de facto</i> as well as <i>de jure</
 i>.</p><p>A monument on the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birgu" ti
 tle="Birgu">Birgu (Vittoriosa)</a> waterfront commemorates this event.</p>

 de Oliveira Salazar">Ant&oacute;nio de Oliveira Salazar</a>. Soon after the
  Carnation Revolution in 1974, the bridge was renamed the <a href="http://e
 n.wikipedia.org/wiki/25_de_Abril_Bridge" title="25 de Abril Bridge">25 de A
 bril Bridge</a>, the day the revolution had occurred. A symbol of those tim
 es was captured on film, with citizens removing the big brass "Salazar" sig
 n from one of the main pillars of the bridge and painting a provisional "25
  de Abril" in its place.</p><p>In Portugal, many avenues, squares, and stre
 ets are named after the day of the revolution &ndash; 25 April.</p>
