The northern solstice on the earth occurs in June according to the Gregorian calendar. Common are June 20 and June 21. It is therefore also known as June solstice in West ern culture.
In the Northern Hemisphere it is the summer solstice, in the Southern Hemisphere it is the winter solstice.

Robert Inger soll was born in Dresden, New York. His father, John Ingersoll, was an abolitionist-lean ing Presbyterian preacher, whose radical views forced his family to move frequently. For a time, Rev. John Ingersoll filled the pulpit for American revivalist Charles G. Finney while Finney was on a tour of Europe. Upon Finney's return, Rev. Ingersoll remained for a few months as co-pastor/associate pastor under Finney. The e lder Ingersoll's later pastoral experiences influenced young Robert negativ ely, however, as The Elmira Telegram described in 1890: [1]

The law establishing the holiday was created i n 2004 with the passage of an amendment by Senator Robert Byrd to the Omnibus spending bill of 2004.[3] Before this law was enacted, the holiday was known as "Citizenship Day". In addition to renaming the holiday "Constitution Day and Citizenship Day, " the act mandates that all publicly funded educational institutions provid e educational programming on the history of the American Constitution on th at day.[4< span>] In May 2005, the United States Department of Education announced the enact ment of this law and that it would apply to any school receiving federal fu nds of any kind.[5] This holiday is not observed by granting time off work for federal employ ees.

The semina l event connected to Freethought Day is a letter written by then Massachuse tts Governor William Phips in which he wrote to the Privy Council of the British monarchs, Wil liam and Mary, on this day in 1692. In this correspondence he outlined the quagmire that the trials had degenerated into, in part by a reliance on "ev idence" of a non-objective nature and especially "spectral evidence" in whi ch the accusers claimed to see devils and other phantasms consorting with t he accused.

According to the organizers of the National Day of Reason, the National Day of Prayer, "violates the First Amendment of the United States Cons titution because it asks federal, state, and local government entities to set aside tax dollar s upported time and space to engage in religious ceremonies".[4]
