La Tomatina (Valencian pronunciation: [la tomaˈtina]) is a festiva l that is held in the Valencian town of Buñol, a town located 30 km inland from the Mediterranean Sea in w hich participants throw tomatoes and get involved in this tom ato fight purely for fun. It is held on the last Wednesday of August, durin g the week of festivities of Buñol.
In 1945, during a parade o f gigantes y cabezudos, young men wanted to be in the eve nt staged a brawl in town's main square, the Plaza del Pueblo. Since there was a vegetable stand nearby, they picked up tomatoes and used them as weap ons. The police had to intervene to break up the fight, and forced those re sponsible to pay the damages incurred.

Ferm in is said to have been the son of a Roman of senatorial rank in Pamplona in the 3rd centu ry, who was converted to Christianity by Saint Honestus, a disciple o f Saint Sa turninus. According to tradition, he was baptised by Saturninus (in Nav arre also known as Saint Cernin) at the spot now known as the "Small Well o f Saint Cernin" [2][3] Fermin was ordained a priest in Toulouse and returned to Pamplona as its first bishop. On a later preaching voyage, Fer min was beheaded in Amiens, France; and is now considered a martyr in the Catholic Church .[3 ] It is believed he died on September 25, AD 303. Th ere is no written record of veneration in Pamplona of the Saint until the 1 2th century. Saint Fermin, as well as Saint Francis Xavier, are now t he two patrons of Navarre.[3] At Pamplona, Saint Fermin; is now sometimes said to have met his end by being dragged through the stre ets of Pamplona by bulls, a fate more commonly attributed to his mentor, Saturnin.
