Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed annually on the la
st Monday of May (May 28 in 2012).[1] Formerly known as Decoration Day, it orig
inated after the American Civil War to commemorate the fallen
Union soldiers of the Civil War. (Southern ladies organizations and southe
rn schoolchildren had decorated Confederate graves in Richmond and other ci
ties during the Civil War, but each region had its own date. Most dates wer
e in May.) By the 20th century Memorial Day had been extended to honor all
Americans who have died in all wars. Memorial Day is a day of remembering t
he men and women who died while serving in the Un

By the early 20th centu ry, Memorial Day was an occasion for more general expressions of memory, as people visited the graves of their deceased relatives, whether they had se rved in the military or not. It also became a long weekend increasingly dev oted to shopping, family gatherings, fireworks, trips to the beach, and nat ional media events such as the Indianapolis 500 auto race, held s ince 1911 on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend.[3]

The reenactment group consists of four m embers and has appeared on the History Channel. A documentary entitled THE RE-ENACTORS OF SAN JACINTO directed by Emmy-win ner Allen Morris, was released in 2010 and shown on HoustonPBS. The documentary details the annual San Jacinto Day celebration and shows the r eenactment of the 18 minute battle.
